You drove three hours. You watched him trot up on a hard surface, sat on him for fifteen minutes in an unfamiliar school, and asked the questions you could think of at the time.
He seemed lovely. The owner seemed lovely. Everything seemed fine.
And then the horse arrived home, and the picture started to change. The stiffness you'd put down to travel didn't settle. The behaviour you'd been told was "just fresh" turned out to be something else entirely. The saddle wouldn't fit. The one rein got worse, not better.

Nobody teaches riders how to actually assess a horse. You're expected to arrive at a viewing, in someone else's yard, on someone else's timetable, and make a five-figure decision using instinct and a two-minute trot up.

A vet checks for clinical soundness on the day. They are not assessing whether this horse's conformation suits your discipline, whether their posture will hold up to the work you're planning, or whether the way they move is going to break down under a rider of your level.

The problem isn't effort.
It's that all of that advice is a list of things to look at, with no method for what to do with what you see.

What you need isn't more things to check. It's a sequence.
One that starts before you ever open a sales page and ends with a horse you understand.

Meet Dr Emma-Louise Emerson
Most horse-buying advice comes from people who sell horses. Mine comes from the clinic, the arena and eighteen years working with all ages and backgrounds of riders.
I trained first as a scientist, with a BSc in Biochemistry and Pharmacology, then qualified at Master's level in both human and veterinary chiropractic. Since then I've added postgraduate training in coaching, sports, paediatrics, neurology, advanced biomechanics, psychology, nutrition and aesthetic medicine. I'm also the published author of a book on falls prevention for riders.
Why I built The EquiCan Academy
Some of the most valuable knowledge in equestrian sport never leaves professional circles. So I brought together global experts, professional coaches and exceptional riders with one mission: to put evidence-based education in the hands of every rider.
Why I built the Horse Detective™️ Method
I kept seeing the same thing. Good, conscientious riders were making one of the biggest decisions of their lives with no framework at all, even though a horse can mean six figures over its lifetime. The information existed. It just wasn't reaching riders when it mattered.
The Horse Detective™️ Method changes that. You stop arriving at viewings hoping to fall in love, and start arriving with a process. Before you even get out of the car, you know what you're looking for. You know what each thing you see actually predicts. And you know which questions draw out honest answers.
You stop arriving at viewings hoping to like the horse, and start arriving with a process. You know what you're looking for before you go. You know what each thing you observe actually predicts. You know which questions produce honest answers and which ones invite a polished story.
And most importantly...
You know when to walk away. Early, cheaply, and without the sunk-cost feeling that makes so many riders buy a horse they already had doubts about.
